Carrie Hetzel
Education, Outreach, and Opportunity Manager

Carrie Hetzel is the Education, Outreach, and Opportunity Manager for C-CAS. She manages activities related to informal science communication, professional development, and other broader impacts areas. She also directs the summer undergraduate research programs (SURFs) at C-CAS.
Before joining C-CAS, Carrie received her PhD in Virology from Harvard Medical school. During her PhD, Carrie studied the symbiotic relationship between human parasites and the viruses they harbor. She received her BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Johns Hopkins University.
Carrie is interested in supporting individuals from underrepresented populations to enter and continue in science. In graduate school, she worked to advocate for increased access for disabled scientists and mentored students through the Furshpan Potter Native American High School Summer Program.
Originally from the Philadelphia suburbs, Carrie is an avid Eagles fan. She currently lives with her partner in Madison, WI.
